The experience of elderly individuals in confronting issues of self-identity and mental health after retirement
This study aims to explore the
experiences of older adults in facing the challenges associated with loss of
self-identity and mental health after retirement. Retirement is considered one
of the most significant life transitions for seniors, where social roles change
and professional identity diminishes, leading to a range of psychological and social
challenges that affect their sense of belonging and psychological balance. The
study employed a qualitative methodology, collecting data through interviews
and analyzing the results to identify the factors influencing seniors'
experiences and the strategies they use to adapt to this new phase. The
findings indicated that social and familial support, along with opportunities
to participate in social and cultural activities, play a crucial role in
enhancing mental health and maintaining self-identity. The study also revealed
variability in the level of adaptation among seniors, which depends on factors
such as support levels, physical health, and personal resilience. The study
recommends strengthening awareness programs and providing psychological and social
interventions tailored to this demographic to ensure a dignified and stable
life, enable seniors to effectively express themselves after retirement, and
achieve sustainable psychological and social well-being.
