The Relationship between Philosophy and Religion in Augustine and the Illuminationist Theory
This study aimed to identify the
concept of philosophy and religion according to Augustine and to study his
theory of illumination. It shed light on the principle of doubt according to
Augustine. It also adopted the analytical approach to reach the results and
achieve its goals. It reached some important results،
including: Augustine believes that the certain truth is a truth far removed
from the senses and reassurance of a true faith truth،
which is the removal of the senses and their tools from the path of knowledge، leaving the conscience and illumination alone sufficient for
that and without an intermediary،
but rather emanating directly from the soul. Also،
reason and religion are considered by Augustine to be of the same rank and
neither of them can be dispensed with to reach the truth. Rather،
the correct way to reach it is when reason has religion as its subject and
religion has reason as its tool. The study also recommended deepening research
into the nature of philosophy and religion according to the philosopher
Augustine and comparing it with other philosophers who interpreted the concept
of religion and philosophy،
especially Arab Muslim thinkers.
